REVIEW: Post-Bromantic Attraction in Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, Or: Holmes + Watson 4eva

Romance! Jealousy! Temptation! There’s an alluring new stranger vying for Sherlock Holmes’s attentions and affections in Guy Ritchie’s turn-of-the-century sleuthing sequel, A Game of Shadows, but it’s not the dark and beautiful gypsy woman at the center of Holmes’s latest mystery. For that matter, Holmes’s on-again, off-again ladyfriend Irene Adler doesn’t truly have his heart, either. It’s BFF and hetero life partner Dr. Watson who forms the tale’s real love triangle with Holmes — escalating the first film’s bromantic undercurrent of mutual admiration and “circumstantial homosexuality” to overt, unabashed man-love and dangerous attraction — with tantalizingly evil interloper Professor James Moriarty. Where 2009’s Sherlock Holmes introduced Robert Downey Jr.’s manic take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective hero with a fairly bland, small potatoes (if intentionally labyrinthine) plot and villain, only hinting at the ominous machinations of famed Holmes nemesis Moriarty (Jared Harris), A Game of Shadows ups the ante and continues where things left off. Months after solving the Blackwood case, Holmes has retreated back into manic-depressive seclusion in his squalid flat, consumed by a web of conspiracies he’s traced back to celebrated game theorist, lecturer, and criminal mastermind Moriarty; by no small coincidence, Watson (Jude Law) has been busy planning his wedding to Mary (Kelly Reilly), leaving Holmes in a lonely, formaldehyde-swilling, depressed-obsessive malaise. Holmes perks up when a terrorist bomb plot blamed on anarchists points to his new foe, who happens to have also recently disposed of his reluctant pawn Irene, her crafty services rendered unnecessary due to her pesky penchant for Holmes. That gets Sherlock’s goat, all right (and, gratefully, relieves us of Rachel McAdams, who never could keep up with RDJ’s jaunty pace — thank goodness for the capable, darting Noomi Rapace, who makes her English language debut) but that which tickles him so about Moriarty is almost purely intellectual — the challenge of facing off against rival as evil as he is moral, who can match him, and perhaps even best him, in a game of wits. Put it this way: With soul mate Watson off committing his nuptials to a woman, it’s Moriarty who stirs Holmes’s senses and seduces him back into action. The play between wild-eyed Downey and the serenely unsettling Harris crackles with a chemistry befitting Doyle’s iconic literary nemeses as Moriarty stays coolly one step ahead of our hero throughout the serviceable Euro-tripping plot. Kieran and Michele Mulroney’s script takes Holmes and Watson (not to mention periphery characters like Holmes’s brother Mycroft, played by a delightfully daft-dapper Stephen Fry) through gypsy camps, anarchist hideouts, the Paris Opera House, a German munitions factory, an international diplomatic summit, and the snowy Swiss Alps in the pursuit of Moriarty, who unveils his intentions bit by bit until the scope of his plans are revealed. Along the way, Holmes and Watson reconnect and rekindle their relationship. A train ambush on the night of Watson’s honeymoon gives Holmes the perfect opportunity to slyly take Mrs. Watson out of the equation — for her own safety, naturally — leading to the film’s most obvious series of post-bromantic scenes: Holmes, in drag, finagles intimate poses with Watson under the cover of a masculine, wall-smashing train shoot-out. Their love affair is no longer subtextual; Ritchie exploits it for laughs with a knowing nod as if to say yes, these men are in each others’ hearts. One of them is rouged up in a corset. What of it? After all, the times are a-changin’. Industrialism is emerging in the world. Why not depict progressivism where emotional politics are concerned? Even the action achieves a balance of muscular machismo and delicate elegance. A forest chase through the woods of Germany allows for Ritchie’s showiest new trick, exploiting multiple high-speed cameras to explode entire tree trunks in gorgeous showers around his fleeing actors. Steadicam-like rigs trained on Holmes and Co. as they race through the battle give a disorienting, panting urgency to the chaos. The professor has designs on profiteering from World War — a cynical plot to capitalize on man’s natural impulse for conflict, he explains — but even Moriarty can’t resist delaying his plans for a last-act game of chess with Holmes. Ritchie dusts off and builds on the gimmicky Sherlock-o-Vision he devised in the previous film, which utilized speed ramping and choreography to illustrate Holmes’s near pre-cognitive ability to preview his own fist fights; the twist here allows for a delicious, penetrating intimacy that takes the Holmes-Moriarty pas de deux to its climax. Doyle students may see the final act telegraphed from a league away and heave a heavy sigh, or peck at the franchise’s signature obligatory plot convolutions and self-satisfied cleverness. Action purists should be entertained enough by the slick spectacles Ritchie chains together, set against as handsome a historical London as you’re bound to get from the movies. But focus on the heart of Holmes and there’s a well of emotions, attraction, and longing roiling beneath the natty threads, Downey-isms, and faux Victorian panache on display. The women of Sherlock hold their own, for the most part, but this is a romance for men — at least, it’s one for Holmes and Watson and Moriarty, who each discover that the dread, or triumph, of a world-changing event is no match for the heart-pounding pull of finding, or losing, the one person in the world to whom you’re indelibly, inextricably tied. Yeah, Baby: Austin Powers Reportedly Headed to Broadway

Just when you thought that Hollywood had run out of hit movies to adapt into Broadway musicals, word is spreading that Mike Myers is in discussions to translate his ’60s spy spoof series for the stage. But just how involved will the franchise creator and star be in Austin Powers: The Musical — especially when he is reportedly busy writing a fourth film installment for the British secret agent? A source close to the actor confirmed the news to the NY Post: “Mike is in talks to turn Austin Powers into a musical stage show. Mike would be heavily involved in writing the show, but he will not star in it, even though he has quite a good singing voice.” So yes, as clarified, the actor (with quite a good singing voice) — last seen in Inglourious Basterds and last heard in Shrek Forever After — will not be starring in the musical Austin Powers. After all, that would be a wildly taxing feat considering Myers played four different roles in the franchise (Austin Powers, Doctor Evil, Fat Bastard and Goldmember). Myers is also reportedly busy penning a fourth Austin Powers movie that is anticipated to arrive in theaters in 2013 or 2014. The last film, Austin Powers in Goldmember, was released in 2002. Is this a movie-to-musical adaptation that you will get behind? Or is your mojo rising more for Rocky’s German stage premiere? ‘Powers’ bound for B’way [NYP]

Angelina Jolie and 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson on Hollywood's Female Director Deficit, New 'Kung Fu Panda 3'

Directorial novice Angelina Jolie(In the Land of Blood and Honey) and her Kung Fu Panda 2 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, the highest-grossing female director of all time, were shot by Peggy Sirota for the cover of the currentHollywood Reporter. Recently, they sat down with THRsenior film writer Pamela McClintock for a frank discussion on the lack of female directors in Hollywood, their own directorial mentors, feelings on awards nominations (Panda 2 leads the Annie noms with 12 and Blood and Honey could get a Golden Globe nomination for best foreign language film) and the status of a Kung Fu Panda 3. Jolie also opens up about being a first-time director, explaining how she got a "famously unsuccessful" topic (war) funded, when she found the time to write and what really happened to shut down the Bosnia set ofBlood and Honey, which opens in limited release Dec. 23.our editor recommendsAngelina Jolie's 'In the Land of Blood and Honey': 4 New Clips Depict the Bosnian War (Video)Angelina Jolie Explains Choosing 'Blood and Honey' for Directorial Debut (Video)'Kung Fu Panda 2' Leads Annie Award Nominations'Kung Fu Panda 2' Crosses $300 Million OffshoreFEINBERG FORECAST: 'War Horse,' 'Extremely Loud,' 'Dragon Tattoo,' 'Iron Lady' and 'Blood and Honey' Remain Question Marks Their interview ran as a part of THR's larger female directors package, highlighting Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground), Dee Rees (Pariah), Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady), Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) and Patty Jenkins (Monster). PHOTOS: 5 of Hollywood's Hottest Female Directors WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT HOLLYWOOD'S DEARTH OF FEMALE DIRECTORS Although neither would label herself an activist for female causes per se, the duo are mystified as to why there aren't more women directors -- only 13.4 percent of the DGA's director members are female. To boot,Kung Fu Panda 2is only the second animated studio pic solely directed by a woman, afterThe Tigger Movie. Angelina Jolie:"Isn't that crazy? Animated films are so family-oriented, you'd think that there would be women." Jennifer Yuh Nelson:I don't think about the gender thing very much. But when I speak at schools, I've had female students say to me afterwards, "I never envisioned myself being a director, since I've never seen women do it." But after seeing me, they can picture themselves directing, so maybe we'll see more female directors. And half of these kids in art and animation schools are girls. PHOTOS: The Kung Fu Panda 2 Premiere ON MAKING THE SECONDKUNG FU PANDA AND WHY IT TOOK THREE YEARS Nelson:It's a long process, and you have to know exactly what's going to happen next. You can't do coverage. Everything has to be planned ahead of time. And you have to make sure that people are still motivated and happy and creatively challenged so that it can all be stitched together. The voice acting starts after a lot of the storyboards are done. With Angie, things would change when we got into the booth and played with her lines. We would discover things in the moment and rewrite the script on the spot. She really knows the character, so when she would say, "A tiger wouldn't say that," she was absolutely right. She gives Tigress that extra level, and that's why people like the character so much. Sometimes, Angie's kids would be in the booth with me. [Jolie's son] Maddox would say, "That take was good," and I'd think, OK, he likes it, let's take that one. Jolie:On the firstKung Fu Panda, I would fight a line. With Jen, she would politely say, "Can we just try it?" And you kind of melt and say, "OK." She is a genuine artist who can see the bigger picture. And, fortunately, I've scored some points at home because of Kung Fu Panda. They love Tigress, who is my alternate personality. Otherwise, they think Brad [Pitt] and I are just so not cool. PHOTOS: Angelina Jolie's Top 10 Red Carpet Looks THEIR DIRECTORIAL ROLE MODELS Jolie:I've had the fortunate experience of working with so many interesting directors, from Michael Winterbottom to Clint Eastwood. I tried to remember the experiences that were my best as an actor, and what a director did to give me comfort and confidence. And I tried to keep a happy crew, which I learned a lot about from Clint and Jen. Nelson:I remember being in the middle ofKung Fu Panda, which took three years, and everyone was upset and tired and wondering if we were ever going to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and Guillermo del Toro stopped by and gave me the "man" speech. He said, "You've gotta man up and take this, and don't be scared of making bold choices." He was such a great supporter. PHOTOS: 'The Tourist's' Style JOLIE PERSONALLY FUNDED LARGE CHUNK OF IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY'S $15 MILLION BUDGET;GRAHAM KING PUT UP THE REST Jolie:I worked with him onThe Tourist, and one day I asked him if he'd read my script. I didn't know how he'd react, since on many levels, this was a big risk. I wasn't going to star in it, and I wanted to cast all local actors. It wasn't a pile of good news for him. But he was great, and he took the chance. PHOTOS: Hollywood's 10 Highest-Paid Actresses WHEN SHE FOUND THE TIME TO WRITE THE SCRIPT Jolie:I wrote whenever I could, when the kids were asleep or in their classes. Halfway through some of the most horrific scenes, I'd hear, "Mommy, I need another story, I can't go to sleep," and so I'd pause what I was doing and go tell happy stories about bunny villages. I studied a lot about the war, and watched a lot of documentaries. They won't see this movie. They know that mommy, on occasion, goes off to Libya or other places. I make them very conscious of the fact that there are a lot of people struggling through different things, and I don't protect them from the fact that war isn't a video game, it's a very, very horrible thing. THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE BOSNIAN WOMAN WHO PROTESTED HER MOVIE Before reading her script, the Bosnian government temporarily suspended Jolie's filming permit when the Association of Women Victims of War in Bosnia objected to a Muslim woman falling in love with her Serb captor. But, that wasn't the case -- the two fall in love before the war starts -- so the film's permit was reissued. Jolie:There was one woman who hadn't read the script, and who didn't want to meet with me. This is a very sensitive subject for someone who lived through these things. It's only been 15 years since the war and it's a painful memory. In my heart, the film was done on behalf of all people who suffered through this. A lot of women's groups have seen it, and the NY premiere of the movie was co-sponsored by Women for Women International, another group founded after the war in Bosnia. They felt it was the right thing to support it. Nelson:It's definitely not a passive movie and it makes you think. VIDEOS: 4 Clips From 'In the Land of Blood and Honey' THE STATUS OF KUNG FU PANDA 3 Nelson:There's plenty left to tell. Jolie:We can say we are in discussions. Tigress is my alternate personality, especially with children. I love animation because you get to do things you don't normally get to. For one, I could bring my kids and wear my pajamas, and hang out with Jen. And my character is just so badass. Nelson:And the stunts are safe. Jolie:Yes, eating pizza is the hardest stunt we did. Supernatural Episode Recap: "Death's Door"

Bobby. Bobby. Bobby. The most popular gruff father figure/hunter reaches "Death's Door." Again. Situations are searching serious and permanent after being shot within the mind in "How you can Win Buddies and Influence Monsters." While Bobby's inside a coma, a reaper visits him, that is never a great sign. So that as he encounters his life's finest (and worst) hits and attempts to try to acquire some essential Leviathan apple to Mike and Dean, we discover a great deal concerning the character and go to get all teary-eyed along the way. The final Supernatural of 2011 is an extremely emotional episode. Jim Beaver does a great job of offerring a guy eager to outsmart, overcome and outplay a reaper who's after Bobby. To be able to discover a method to return to the boys and provide them some necessary information he got during Leviathan captivity, he needs to sort out some painful reminiscences. But reliving his worst memory might be the important thing to returning to the boys. Steven Williams has returned for "Death's Door." I am still (a lot more than) just a little bitter over Rufus getting been wiped out off in Season 6 but a minimum of this examine Bobby's brain includes seeing Bobby & Rufus for action as ghost-hunting partners. Rufus also eventually ends up associated Singer about this examine his "fruitcake" and functions as kind of helpful information. It is good to determine Rufus return although that which was track of that earring? It had been dangling. A few running styles develop. Something which just get repeated is Bobby "breaks" everything he touches. Also, the ghost he and Rufus are attempting to rid the field of calls him a heart breaker. And the wife informs him he broke her heart. Poor Bobby. A lot of reasons equal to why he's virtually damaged inside. Because of his abusive childhood, he's broken. He's an alcoholic for any father along with a wronged enabler of the mother that keeps making excuses and accusing her boy for his dad's abusive behavior. The little one can't do anything whatsoever with no father taking it on his family. Within this very "Eternal friggin' Sunshine" examine Bobby's mind, it is going in one memory to a different to a different so quick I am not necessarily sure what's real. Like whenever a youthful Bobby shoots his father following the adult Bobby finally confronts him. Did that actually happen? Did Bobby really shoot and kill his father when he am youthful? After which when he was a grownup he needed to kill his possessed wife? So unfair. Such as the reaper stated, he's "the only situation of genetic bullet-in-the-brain he's seen.Inch Younger crowd hits the bottle a tad too similar to his father. No surprise Bobby did not wish to have any kids. And that is the large thought we learned concerning his wife. She recognized Bobby did not wish to have any kids and felt tricked and her heart broke because she wanted them badly and that he understood she did. We learn she got possessed only 72 hours after their confrontation so we know why. She was weaker to being absorbed due to her fragile frame of mind. Bobby places blame themself for which happened to his wife. In the end, he is doing break everything he touches. Another theme that evolves isn't a brand new one. It simply will get fleshed out more. Bobby's relationship with Mike and Dean is most likely the most important relationship of his existence apart from the main one together with his wife. And That I got just a little teary writing that sentence that is crazy. Among the reminiscences we have seen is Bobby and Dean inside a park. Per John's orders, Dean's said to be practicing to shoot double-barrel shotguns but Bobby takes him to experience catch. Later, he even needs to defend themself to John about playing catch with Dean rather than training him. We find out how important the boys will be to him through the episode but more about that the little later. First, let us take a rest from Bobby's noggin' and discuss what are you doing within the real life. Mike and Dean are naturally worried and upset and concerned for his or her "uncle." Mike does not move not even close to Bobby's room. There's certainly a great deal being applied underneath but he's in charge. At some point, he's working that scar on his hands so he's most likely seeing Lucifer and attempting to make things disappear. Mike also wants to speak to Dean by what they are going to need to do if/when Bobby dies. Sam's just attempting to be sensible. Dean's the precise complete opposite of course. He's getting around a great deal, his tension is appropriate in the surface and that he appears like he's prepared to blow at any second. When that hospital administrator foretells Bobby's next of kin (Dean) about Mr. Singer giving his organs, Dean punches the wall and informs the man to escape him. Good move, guy. He then goes outdoors where he sees the smuggy smuggerson referred to as Leviathan Dick Roman. Dean's attempting to provoke some kind of reaction but Dick does not budge. He informs Dean to visit check up on Bobby. In the end, he's an excellent shot. There have been a couple of moments that helped me tear up. I understand I most likely wasn't the only person: "You have done enough. Trust me.Inch "I do not care." "Why?" "Because they are my boys." Bobby awakens and creates the amounts (the Leviathan apple) on Sam's hands. He musters in the strength to express "idjits" after which immediately begins to flatline. "You break all you touch." "Uh huh. Well, as fate might say, I adopted two boys plus they was raised great. They was raised heroes! To help you visit hell!" "They will be OK without you." "Last memory, huh? Glad I saved the very best for last." Bobby walks in to the room where Mike and Dean are quarreling like siblings over menial things. Dean wants Mike to exhibit "his elders some respect" and Mike calls Dean an "a--hat." It's nice to determine them this way. Bobby thinks also. All he is able to do is relax and drink everything in. And so the siblings disappear, the bullet melting his reminiscences away. The reaper turns up once again and states: "Well, Bobby? Stay or go. What's it likely to be?Inch Credits. My problem with "Death's Door": Apart from the high cliff-hanger ending, this did not really appear just like a midseason finale in my experience. Apart from Bobby obtaining the amounts to Mike and Dean, it did not really move any large picture action forward greatly. That's awesome for normal weekly episodes however for a midseason finale, I expect a bit more Random Ideas -They went all CSI a few occasions to exhibit the road the bullet experienced Bobby's brain, did not they? -The number of occasions did Bobby say "balls?" -Large Dad Winchester is again made to resemble a bad father. If Jeffrey Dean Morgan ever turns up to experience John again (and that i sincerely hope he is doing), I question the way the show's going additional? The boys have a great deal to be angry about. And I wish to view it all engage in. Much like Bobby got related to his father. -Clearly Ridge Canipe is simply too old to experience the youthful Dean Winchester necessary for this flashback (he's 17 now). However it was still being odd to determine a brand new kid actor playing him. Seeing Bobby and Dean play catch is a superb moment however i was slightly removed from it as this kid looks so not the same as Ridge. -Again, James Patrick Stuart performs exceptionally well at causeing this to be guy super smarmy. I'm not sure how he is doing it. -Dean and Mike were discussing the abilities of Chuck Norris versus Jet Li. After which throughout among the commercial breaks was an advertisement for something which featured Chuck Norris. Strange. -How sad maybe it was when things stored vanishing in Bobby's limbo-land? It is because his brain matter was vanishing. Boo. -Amounts on Supernatural? Appears a lot more like Lost. -Dean loves licorice and Mike loves peanut butter and blueberry sandwiches? How did we not know this before? -Love how clever Bobby is at trapping the reaper. Obviously, he accepted he'd learned a little from Mike and Dean's dealings with reapers. This episode did help remind me of "During My Duration of Dying" in additional ways than a single. Mike and Dean waiting helplessly his or her father (or father figure) flatlines. Attempting to return because they are needed. The reaper attempting to take proper care of business after which being turned away. Or perhaps in this situation, possibly turned away. We will not know without a doubt until Friday The month of january 6, 2012. Speak with everyone then. Allow the winter hellatus begin. show less

Euro court rules out web filter

BRUSSELS -- The European Court of Justice has ruled that internet service providers cannot be forced by law to install filtering systems that prevent illegal file downloads. Decision, handed down Thursday, relates to music piracy in Belgium, but will apply across the European Union. In 2004, Belgian rights management organization SABAM obtained an injunction requiring the company Scarlet Extended to stop its customers exchanging files containing music in the SABAM repertoire. Scarlet appealed, and the Belgian court asked the European Court of Justice for advice. Its ruling concludes that, in order to filter out the offending files, the ISP would have to monitor all of its customers' electronic communication. Such a general monitoring obligation is incompatible with European law. It also ruled that the injunction failed to respect the fundamental rights of customers and of the ISP. Requiring Scarlet to install a complicated, costly, permanent computer system at its own expense would be a serious infringement of the company's freedom to conduct its business, it said. Hammond: Less Limited Rules, Food And Filmmakers Drawing More Academy People To Tests

Throw them an event and they'll come. Or at best a reception with good drink and food. That appears to be using the progressively strong turnouts of Academy people at tests this year.Just like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association along with other groups galleries are finding a shrimp cocktail could be a effective magnet forpotential voters. TheAcademy’s new pre-nomination relaxed rules appear to become getting an optimistic effect, at leastif evidence at recent tests is any suggestion. Which was precisely the Academy’s point once they introduced on September 21 there will be a helping to loosen of limitations on the sorts of tests that Academy people might be directly asked — a minimum of before nominations. In the past years galleries and marketers may have become their hands smacked or Oscar tickets removed when they dared to ask Academy people to tests that incorporated Q&As, receptions, food, drink and interacting withfilmmakers. People could onlyjust attend a movie, not take part in along side it shows or receptions. Period. Obviously consultants got for this bygoing to guild people rather, and clearly there's a really strong crossover membership between your guilds and also the Academy. The shackles happen to be removed and people appear to become turning in bigger numbersto watch, eat and mingle. Monday evening The Weinstein Company came a packed industry crowd towards the Academy’s own 1000 chair-plusSamuel Goldwyn Theatre for any special screening, Q&Aand reception of the black and whitened quiet, The Artist. Additionally towards the guild people the attendance by Academy voters was well into three numbers. A number of them including Angie Dickinson and David Ladd amongst others were seeing it for again around the giant screen. Harvey Weinstein introduced the film in addition to special visitors, Carmen and Dolores Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughters who had flown in from Paris simply to provide the family’s official endorsement from the movie which they stated their grandfather would truly appreciate. A Q&A (that we moderated) adopted with author/director Michel Hazanavicius and co-stars Berenice Bejo, Penelope Ann Burns, Missi Pyle and James Cromwell after which a more sophisticated reception. Uggie, your dog star from the film even demonstrated for any pre-screening photo op but was forbidden through the Academy from getting involved in the Q&A. Apparently this ill-conceivedrule also will apply towards the equine from War Equine along with other animal stars this season. Anyway before year Academy people could not have been asked straight to something similar to this, especially in their own individual theatre. Tuesday evening Vital gets control the Academy for the same event for his or her summer time hit, Super 8 which they're also Oscar campaigning. It’s charged like a DVD release party however the studio doesn’t need to hide the intent. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams and cast is going to be present and thus will many asked Academy people among other participants. Several Acad people also attended a screening and Q&A for that film at Vital on October 29th. One consultant explained “it’s so odd to have the ability to invite them (the Academy) directly now, but they're certainly being released”. Actually Vital has truly become in to the swing from it with several tests of Martin Scorsese’sHugo on shorelines last week. In La an organized have a picnic coinciding by having an 11AM screening from the movie at Vital having a heavy audience of AMPAS people needed to be moved right into a soundstage because of atorrential downpourSunday but even that “didn’t effect the turnout – it had been an excellent screening having a very passionate response,” based on a Componen honours consultant. There’s a different one having a reception Tuesday evening at Vital located by producer/director Irwin Winkler who informs me he thinks Hugo may be the year’s Best Picture to date (Winkler created such Martin Scorsese films as Raging Bull and Goodfellas). Vital knows the film using its spectacular three dimensional is better seen on the screen, not really a screener. The relaxed rules are helping them draw more people from their houses and right into a theatre to determine it the actual way it was supposed to have been seen. Last Friday evening Warner Bros. used the existence of director Steven Soderbergh, author Scott Z. Burns and Producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher plus “hosts” Benicio Del Toro and Jerry Weintraub to lure an audience to some Beverly Hillsides screening of Contagion which was preceded with a drink and food reception. In the beginning Warners wasn’t planning for a large campaign with this movie in regards to a deadly disease distributing around the world however the strategy transformed if this grew to become popular. Not to mention Soderbergh includes a strong relationship using the studio although he did drop from their tentpole hopeful, The Guy From U.N.C.L.E. a week ago, saying it simply wasn’t uniting satisfactorily also it was better to exitnow instead of down the road if this would actually be harmful. He’s looking forward to the Liberace biopic he's gonna do for HBOnext summer time before his self-enforced hiatus and hopes to operate another film in until then. He stated Michael Douglas just known as, very excited, and wishes to show him what he's upset to date using the portrayal. Shamberg, clearly frustrated at not making their email list of commentators, pointedly requested me why I figured Contagion wasn't being taken more seriously being an Oscar contender. Maybe it'll if Warners keeps flowing your wine at occasions such as these. The Acad people I spoke to in the pre-reception didn’t even appear to be aware what the film involved prior to going in but something attracted them there. Sunday and Monday nights Academy people and particularly people of their language committee switched to special tests and receptions for foreign lingo challengers Monsieur Lahzar from Canada and Miss Bala from Mexico. Both were created by their filmmakers who spoken to individuals voting people later on. A different one is planned for next Tuesday using the filmmakers of France’s entry, Promise of War then an evening meal later on in a Japanese restaurant lower the road in the Landmark Theatre in which the film will screen. Until this season consultants focusing on these films could only demonstrate to them sans food and filmmaker interaction. Actually even in the Academy’s own official language tests it had been the meals offered between your double billrather compared to movies that a minimum of onevoter pointed out in my experience. “I need to the catering this season is preferable to ever in the Academy,” they stated. It’s a brand new day, the Academy has thankfullyloosened up andmembers are licking their chops in appreciation.

Hilarity round the high seasDepending on whether your home is inside the Uk or US, Aardman's salty new sea comedy The Pirates! Studio-producer deals remain stable

First-look production deals are holding steady: There are now 155 at the studios, a gain of a dozen from a year ago. If you're an optimist, that's great news. But if you're a pessimist, the tally is only about half of the 292 deals in place for Variety's Facts on Pacts story in 2000. Despite the focus on cost-cutting, studios continue to demonstrate that there's a tangible benefit in providing a producer with an office and funding in exchange for having first dibs on development projects. But a decade ago DreamWorks, Miramax and New Line were in their heyday and tallied 79 deals among them. Today Miramax has no deals; DreamWorks, which had only two deals a year ago, has five now; and New Line has grown from three to four by signing Offspring Entertainment, the Adam Shankman-Jennifer Gibgot shingle that had been at Disney. The Mouse House, which is relying on Marvel and Pixar to supply tentpoles, saw the biggest decline, with five deals departing. But Universal's management has shown a solid belief in deals, with a net gain of five.Big names that have signed new deals include Justin Lin, Kevin Spacey, Mark Gordon and Russell Brand. Deals that have expired include Walt Becker, John Wells and Bob Shaye. And deals that have shifted include Scott Rudin, Kennedy/Marshall and Jason Blum.Gordon, who recently signed a deal at Disney, tells Variety that studios realize first-look deals make sense."It's clear that there will continue to be a need for content -- and most of that is started by producers," says Gordon, who's also co-president of the Producers Guild of America. "None of us are daunted by that challenge, by the way. The fact that (the number of deals hasn't really changed) is a testament that studios recognize that most of their material comes from producers."Warner Bros. continues to have the most deals with 31 (excluding the four New Line deals), followed by Universal with 29, if the three Focus deals are excluded. Sony has 26, followed by Fox with 23, Disney with 18 and Paramount with 12.And while some producers privately lament how tight-fisted the Big Six can be on specific deal points, quibbling over the details of development fees, they admit that they'd rather have a deal than not have a deal. "It's always nice to have your overhead taken care of," Gordon notes. "You do have more flexibility if you don't have one, but most producers would rather have one."Many of the pacts cover little more than an office and the salaries for an assistant or two, offering a sharp contrast with major long-term suppliers such as Jerry Bruckheimer at Disney, Imagine at Universal and Lorenzo di Bonaventura at Paramount. Blum, who signed his fourth term deal in July with U -- following deals with Miramax, HBO and Paramount -- tells Variety that he's particularly enthused over being part of the new crop of producers operating at a studio that's improved its performance this year."The great thing about being at Universal now is that it allows me to think about the studio in a long-term way rather than (just considering) the very next project," he adds.Blum's part of the latest addition to the roster -- U's first-look distribution deal with Angle Films, a new shingle announced Nov. 1 and formed by his Blumhouse banner and Gold Circle Films' Paul Brooks to finance and produce genre films with budgets ranging from $15 million to $30 million. And there's nothing like signing a deal that says to the town that you've arrived, much as David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith did this summer with a two-year first-look deal via their KatzSmith Prods. banner following Grahame-Smith's work penning the upcoming "Dark Shadows," with Johnny Depp starring and Tim Burton directing. The duo say that Warner Bros. production prexy Greg Silverman was particularly persuasive."(They're) taking a real big bet on us, since we haven't produced a movie yet," Grahame-Smith admits. "We weren't shy about saying that we wanted to produce, and as we got to know Greg, we felt that this was going to be a good place to make our permanent home."In just a month, KatzSmith has set up three projects -- Jonathan W. Stokes' dark comedy script "Murders and Acquisitions"; Maggie Stiefvater's young adult fantasy novel "Scorpio Races"; and a new version of "Beetlejuice.""If you look at the other deals at Warners, I think we're a pretty good fit, since we kind of specialize in the offbeat and twisted," Grahame-Smith adds. "We're not like Clint Eastwood or Legendary or Todd Phillips at Green Hat, and that's a real benefit to the studio."For Shawn Levy, his six-year-old deal at Fox has enabled him to move into the upper echelon, dating back to the days when he made the transition from family comedies -- "Cheaper by the Dozen" -- into the arena of tentpoles in the form of "Night at the Museum." He recalls that studio co-chief Tom Rothman pressured him for the better of a year to direct "Museum" before he agreed to do so. "?'Night at the Museum' really changed everything for me," Levy admits. "My goal is to be prolific. The deal gives me the ability to get things done, and rarely does a week go by where I don't see the benefits."Levy stressed that there's an unspoken benefit of being on the same page with Fox."They trust me and I trust them," he notes. "Fox will invest in tentpole family movies like 'Neighborhood Watch,' but where it's additionally gratifying is where I can go ahead on smaller projects like 'Kodachrome' and 'The Pleasure of My Company' -- projects that really engage me as a filmmaker. First Published: October 21, 2011 9:47 AM EDT Credit: Getty Images LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore attend the launch party for Real Men Dont Buy Girls at Steven Alan Annex in NY City, on April 14, 2011 Amid spiraling rumors of trouble between Ashton Kutcher and wife Demi Moore and allegations of infidelity against the Two and a Half Men star Ashton has spoken out about honesty and truth in the media. I just wanted to open up a little dialogue on the state of honesty. The state of truth. The status of truth as it pertains to literature and media, the actor said in a video message posted online this week. Ashton goes on to speak at length about the history of literature and shares his thoughts on how the Internet and social media have caused rumors and gossip to spread like never before. We are our own editors, we are our own publishers and we are our own printers. Therefore, people can bastardize the truth in any way, shape or form that they want and spread that around the world, he continued. A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can leave someones lips. Adding, I was thinking that we really have to take it upon ourselves to instill a level of honesty in the works in the media that we create and share with one another and be certain that we are doing our own diligence that what we are saying is for the benefit of another. Earlier this week, Demi was seen in NY City still wearing her wedding ring. Last month, the pair was spotted attending kabbalah services together and also photographed camping outside of Santa Barbara, Calif., over the Yom Kippur holiday. Kelsey Grammer Plays Chicago Mayor in 'Boss'

CHICAGO (AP) Kelsey Grammer helps it be apparent right from the start: He is not playing Mayor Richard M. Daley inside the new dramatic series "Boss" that debuts Friday evening.Sure, his mayor of Chicago talks about in charge for 22 years the particular time Daley spent at the office. For guys the job may also be your family business, with Grammer's Tom Kane following his father-in-law and Daley his father. So when Grammer's character wanted a disguise that nobody may have recognized, he'd have positioned on a Cubs hat and not one bearing the logo design style of Daley's beloved White-colored Sox."I had been writing a show that's a spinoff of Shakespeare (and) she's 400 years round the Daleys," Grammer mentioned this summer season throughout filming in Chicago for your Starz drama (10 p.m. EDT).Grammer told Daley as much, when the two met which he "tried to reassure him that individuals had virtually no goal of taking pot shots at him and also the father." That is certainly true there is nothing about Kane's actions, eloquent kinds of speaking or look that even hint at Da Mayor.Concurrently, Daley as well as the hardball political world through which he was elevated after which it found dominate are such a fundamental piece of this story that Shakespeare's "Richard II" may have labored just like a title instead of "Boss," which, just is really the title in the late Chicago author Mike Royko's famous biography of Daley's father.Audiences around the country is probably not conscious of intricacies of Chicago politics, nonetheless they understand this is often a city where energy, clout simply because they think of it as around here, is held within reach of a few, dads and moms when Al Capone went his bootlegging empire here by utilizing idol idol judges and people in politics he saved within the pocket for the better part of the last half a century when the mayor's surname was always Daley.Tom Kane's energy is aided, for example, with the tales, tales, really, of how Daley's father had enough clout (along with the dead people he allegedly arrived at the polls) to put John Kennedy inside the White-colored House in 1960 and prompt Robert F. Kennedy eight years later to convey the endorsement of Daley, a mayor of basically one city in the heart of the country "means the ballgame" to their personal chances within the presidency. It's the same thing goes using the boy who, though not the country's pressure as his father, could flex their very own political muscles, while he did when he got frustrated with talking about turning a lakefront airport terminal terminal in to a character preserve and merely sent bulldozers inside the dead of evening to carve huge Xs into the runway.Even former Illinois Gov. Fly fishing rod Blagojevich, who will be sentenced for selling or trade Leader Barack Obama's old Senate chair, helps tell the story.InchThe conceit of ours is always to consider politics as cleaner now," mentioned Farhad Safinia, the show's creator and executive producer. "Chicago shows it's not.InchInchThere is this kind of colorful backdrop to see this story that merely will come in Chicago, and so the city itself becomes kind of a personality,Inch agreed Grammer. "We're borrowing Chicago like a kind of miracle kingdom (through which) you'll be able to believe is stuffed with intrigue, disloyality, plot twists, secret documents and an array of things."Chicago's history, both individuals of history couple of many a period sometime ago, are thrown into the story. Grammer's character Tom Kane, for example, in talking about digging up a graveyard to aid the introduction of O'Hare Airport terminal Terminal an authentic event boosts Abraham Lincoln subsequently subsequently as well as the Undercover Railroad. Kane talks about how a city was built, telling of figures such as the Rev. Jeremiah Porter, one of the city's first reformers inside the 1800s and Anton Cermak, a mayor inside the 19 thirties."We've something occurring throughout the evening with bulldozers (after) an edict within the mayor," mentioned Safinia, who'd not elaborate. "I keep finding such things as the Xs inside the runway."The filmmakers use many regions of the city, within the most violent and fighting towns for the sparkling lakefront as well as the jewel of the lakefront, Millennium Park."We went into towns that only people in Chicago find out about,In . mentioned Serta Clancy, the show's production designer who emerged having a couple of from the locations after talking with his father, a outdated Chicago firemen.Once the initial few episodes are any suggestion, the show takes great pains to obtain the pronunciation of several names correct then when they discuss towns, installed them where they ought to be and rehearse the shorthand that's generally used, mentioning for the College of Illinois at Chicago as UIC, for example. And as opposed to other Chicago-based suggests that put imagined addresses in Lake Michigan, "Boss" was careful not to at the begining of episodes. The key opening scene when audiences uncover the idea of the show's saying "Disloyality Starts From InsideInch happens in the building that signifies the city's gritty and frequently brutal past, full of the hooks where slaughtered animals once hung that might be seen over Grammer's shoulder. That scene through which Kane finds out he's a degenerative brain disease sets a bad tone for just about any story that's dark, certainly deeper in comparison to norm for Grammer, who's most broadly known playing Frasier Crane inside the comedies "Cheers" and "Frasier."Grammer mentioned he did not study Daley or any other mayor, explaining that what he needed to learn about Kane he already understood after nearly 3 decades just like a TV star."The advantages of this individual is actually a individual that knows how it's want to be famous but somewhat that assisted me perfectly appropriate for play this individual,In . mentioned Grammer, whose close ties, divorces and problems have extended been the stuff of gossip posts. "You must understand a very long time make the public awareness, a variety of it negative, a number of it positive. That type of showed up for your ride with me at night becoming an actor playing a mayor who's an very well-known guy."Copyright 2011 Connected Press. All rights reserved. Your Skin My Home Is (La Piel Que Habito): Cannes 2011 Review

CANNES -- As implausible as it can appear, the cinema realm of Pedro Almodóvar got stranger within the Skin My Home Is (La Piel Que Habito). Together with such usual Almodóvar obsessions as unfaithfulness, anxiety, loneliness, sexual identity and dying, the The spanish language director has added a science-fiction element that verges on horror. But like many lab experiments, this melodramatic hybrid creates an unsound fusion. Only someone as gifted as Almodóvar might have mixed such elements without coming up a whole movie.our editor recommendsPedro Almodovar on 'The Skin I Live In' -- and How It Is Like to reside in His Skin (Video)Related Subjects•Cannes Film Festival•Cannes Film Festival Revi... With Antonio Banderas coming back towards the fold to experience the mad-researcher protagonist, The new sony Pictures Classics is assured which more than the Almodóvar faithful can have up because of its United States release. Responses will be different, as it is tough to tell simply how much of the has been shipped with tongue-in-oral cavity panache or how psychologically invested the auteur is within his Dr. Frankenstein character. That physician could be Banderas' character, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent cosmetic surgeon and college investigator. As is appropriate for his profession, Robert appears like he walked from the pages GQ. Yet his face conveys a feeling of dark purpose. And that he calculates of the clinic in the own suburban, highly isolated and secure compound outdoors Toledo. He presents co-workers having a paper showing he's been researching the roll-out of a brand new and, more powerful skin that substantially bends the limitations of bioethics. The crowd with this point is knowledgeable that limited within his mansion is really a youthful lady, Vera (Elena Anaya), who's being molded - there's not one other word for this - towards the doctor's specific needs. Which is always to largely resemble his late wife, who had been burned beyond recognition inside a vehicle crash and made a decision to die instead of to reside in such destroyed skin. Vera wears an epidermis-colored body stocking just like a second skin and stays most of the time in a number of yoga positions. These help her to achieve an inner core of selfhood the physician can't ever touch. A guy inside a tiger costume (Roberto Alamo) breaks in to the house. He's in tiger skin since it is Circus time, however, you suspect Almodóvar might have found any excuse to place him into that costume to offer the picture of a tiger around the prowl for Vera. There's first a sexual after which a violent encounter, which results in facts concerning the relationship between your physician and also the tiger-guy, and between your males and Robert's housekeeper (Marisa Paredes). Then your movie flashes back six years, which introduces two more figures, Robert's daughter (Blanca Suárez) along with a local youth (Jan Cornet) who sets his sights around the youthful, psychologically fragile lady as they is at the top of pills in a party. To explain any more the storyline, compiled by Agustin and Pedro Almodóvar from the novel by Thierry Jonquet, would spoil several surprises. While Almodóvar is clearly searching through old films and film genres that by their own admission include Buñuel, Hitchcock, Lang and Franju in addition to Hammer horror and Dario Argento kitsch, he mostly is certainly going following the theme of identity. As the word goes, beauty is just skin deep, that Almodóvar adds that skin are only able to encase a person's identity or soul. For that skin can alter, the soul cannot. Through the movie you will find references towards the French-born American artist and sculpture Louise Bourgeois - Vera looks via a book of her art - and also the story accumulates a lot of sculpture's styles turning around the body and it is requirement for taking care of inside a hostile world contributing to the dying or exorcism from the father figure. For Robert is both a parent figure and Frankenstein creator who seeks to dominate all ladies and eliminate male rivals. Yet Almodóvar goodies him as "mad" and for that reason not fully accountable for his villainy. He's the merchandise of the twisted family and household. The ladies in the existence - his wife, daughter and also the guinea pig - all suffer while he has experienced. So Almodóvar's embrace of his crazed figures is really a tender one, filled with passion and comic glee. The film's design, costumes and music, especially Alberto Iglesias' music, present a lushly beautiful setting, that is nevertheless a prison and house of horror. Almodóvar pumps his movie filled with deadly earnestness and heady feelings. You will find well-timed laughs that decrease the melodrama and underscore that Almodóvar remains ever a prankster. We're not better at tying imagery to feelings, yet even Almodóvar realizes that, as Hitchcock would say, "It's merely a movie, Ingrid." After four years of dating, Paul McCartney, 69, has finally married his American love, Nancy Shevell, 51, in London Sunday afternoon.our editor recommendsPaul McCartney and Nancy Shevell Are Engaged (Report)Paul McCartney -- Concert Review9/11 Anniversary: The Touching Story Behind Showtime's New Paul McCartney DocumentaryWill Paul McCartney's Bride Marry in Stella McCartney's Dress? The couple arrived at Old Marylebone Town Hall where they were met by hundreds of well-wishers and photographers. The former Beatle was wearing a simple dark blue suit and silvery pewter blue tie, while Shevell opted for a classic long-sleeved cocktail-length white dress and a white flower tucked into her hair. According to Monique Jessen of People magazine, both the suit and the dress were designed by Sir Paul's daughter, Stella McCartney. McCartney's youngest daughter, Beatrice, who he fathered with ex-wife Heather Mills, was dressed as a flower girl for the ceremony. About 30 guests were in attendance at the town hall ceremony, including McCartney's former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr. Coincidentally, Sunday would have been John Lennon's 71st birthday. Oscars: Academy Calculates Crowd For Moneyball But Can It Be Best Picture Worthy?

Go getting a little suspicion. But Saturday evening’s “official” Academy member screening of Moneyball made an appearance to draw in most likely probably the most enthusiasm since last May’s packed Evening amount of time in Paris. No less than knowing by a few unwanted responses e-mailed in my opinion by Academy guests in. Clearly it aided the filmcame in a really respectable No. 2 laminator tl901 office a couple of days ago using more than $20 million. One Acad member described it absolutely was “as crowded since it can get.” While another written, “I just visited the Academy screening of Moneyball, plus it was packed! Virtually filled besides a few random open seats.” The make-in the Acad crowd was known to as “older than usual, and a lot of new faces” by another member attending as “definitely older than I'd have expected. But there's great reaction with the film and enormous applause within the finish for Kaira and Jonah.” Another opined that “the lighter moments carried out well, which you know is certainly telling. The pair of jokes were taken proper care of immediately well. There's warm applause within the finish. But personally I gauge baseball movies with the emotional swelling I buy throughout my throat one or more times. I didn’t have that here.” I'd condition that’s as this is a obvious, crisp and awesome andsavvy film a little more about thebusiness of baseball than other activities. They also wondered if the new the new sony will move it intothe Golden Globes comedy category even though it's probably perceived a lot more like a drama. “If it’s a comedy, meaning Pitt can be a lock for top Comedy actor,” they mentioned. I posed that question to one of the film’sconsultants(who referred to as Academyscreening a “home run”) andit hadn’t been spoken about.”I can’t imagine it.” However, a year ago another The brand new the new sony flick with Pitt’s wife,The Tourist, was shoehorned into comedy but got three key nominations. You never know the twist and turns of individuals things, particularly this at the beginning of the summer season. However, producer Scott Rudin, which has two other films likely competing inside the drama groups (The Woman While Using Dragon Tattoo andExtremely Noisy And Very Close) might want to attempt to spread the wealth Globes-wise. I cantell you Moneyball isaLOT more amusing than TheTourist, which i observed numerous laughs once i first seen it inside a La-area theater Sunday evening for again. Even though these Academy tests aren’t a scientific barometer from the film’seventual Oscar chances, they might be useful, particularly in gauging Academyvoter fascination with even seeinga contender. It’s rare to look for the Samuel Goldwyn theater in Beverly Slopes completely full within the officialscreenings. But Iimagine individuals are depriving for somethingthought being “awards worthy” as of this early point Especially since reviews are actually so excellent, by getting a fantastic 94% fresh score at Rotten Tomato vegetables together with a virtually perfect 97% among top experts. It doesn’t get much better than that.Moneyball, nonetheless, you define it, is clearly a Best Picture contender at this time around, and Pitt and JonahHill seems being top competitors for acting nods. Searching within the upcomingAcademy screening diary for October there isn’t a lot of Best Picture fodder being proven. Except perhapsThe Ides Of March from Kaira Pitt’s as well as the Academy’s friend George Clooney within the Sunday matinee on October ninth.Other October official tests with any potential whatsoever include 50/50 next Saturday mid-day and Pedro Almodovar’s language hopeful The Skin Home Is on October 8. After which inside the month more compact “maybes” like Margin Call, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Constantly, and Anonymous. Other filmsbeing provided to the Academy membership areDream House (a horror film not necessarily being examined in advance for experts), Margaret (postponed five years and finally getting released), Jewel Jam Twenty, Kevin Cruz’s self-distributed Red-colored-colored Condition, Dirty Girl, horror remake The Main One Factor, Real Steel (which does boast a surprisinglyterrific kid performance from newcomer Dakota Goyo), Vital’s musical remake of Footloose, nearly straight-to-DVD Trespass, the Steve Martin-Jack Black-Owen Wilson watching wild birds comedy The Big Year, Oranges and Sunshine, The Women round the sixth Floor, as well as the extended-gestating The Rum Diary using the Actor-kaira Pitt. It’s unlikely a number of people will elicit the identical wanna-see factor while using Academy as Moneyball did a couple of days ago. The big question now's whether this baseball movie goes where handful of others have: into the Best Picture selection.
