REVIEW: Post-Bromantic Attraction in Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, Or: Holmes + Watson 4eva

Romance! Jealousy! Temptation! There’s an alluring new stranger vying for Sherlock Holmes’s attentions and affections in Guy Ritchie’s turn-of-the-century sleuthing sequel, A Game of Shadows, but it’s not the dark and beautiful gypsy woman at the center of Holmes’s latest mystery. For that matter, Holmes’s on-again, off-again ladyfriend Irene Adler doesn’t truly have his heart, either. It’s BFF and hetero life partner Dr. Watson who forms the tale’s real love triangle with Holmes — escalating the first film’s bromantic undercurrent of mutual admiration and “circumstantial homosexuality” to overt, unabashed man-love and dangerous attraction — with tantalizingly evil interloper Professor James Moriarty. Where 2009’s Sherlock Holmes introduced Robert Downey Jr.’s manic take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective hero with a fairly bland, small potatoes (if intentionally labyrinthine) plot and villain, only hinting at the ominous machinations of famed Holmes nemesis Moriarty (Jared Harris), A Game of Shadows ups the ante and continues where things left off. Months after solving the Blackwood case, Holmes has retreated back into manic-depressive seclusion in his squalid flat, consumed by a web of conspiracies he’s traced back to celebrated game theorist, lecturer, and criminal mastermind Moriarty; by no small coincidence, Watson (Jude Law) has been busy planning his wedding to Mary (Kelly Reilly), leaving Holmes in a lonely, formaldehyde-swilling, depressed-obsessive malaise. Holmes perks up when a terrorist bomb plot blamed on anarchists points to his new foe, who happens to have also recently disposed of his reluctant pawn Irene, her crafty services rendered unnecessary due to her pesky penchant for Holmes. That gets Sherlock’s goat, all right (and, gratefully, relieves us of Rachel McAdams, who never could keep up with RDJ’s jaunty pace — thank goodness for the capable, darting Noomi Rapace, who makes her English language debut) but that which tickles him so about Moriarty is almost purely intellectual — the challenge of facing off against rival as evil as he is moral, who can match him, and perhaps even best him, in a game of wits. Put it this way: With soul mate Watson off committing his nuptials to a woman, it’s Moriarty who stirs Holmes’s senses and seduces him back into action. The play between wild-eyed Downey and the serenely unsettling Harris crackles with a chemistry befitting Doyle’s iconic literary nemeses as Moriarty stays coolly one step ahead of our hero throughout the serviceable Euro-tripping plot. Kieran and Michele Mulroney’s script takes Holmes and Watson (not to mention periphery characters like Holmes’s brother Mycroft, played by a delightfully daft-dapper Stephen Fry) through gypsy camps, anarchist hideouts, the Paris Opera House, a German munitions factory, an international diplomatic summit, and the snowy Swiss Alps in the pursuit of Moriarty, who unveils his intentions bit by bit until the scope of his plans are revealed. Along the way, Holmes and Watson reconnect and rekindle their relationship. A train ambush on the night of Watson’s honeymoon gives Holmes the perfect opportunity to slyly take Mrs. Watson out of the equation — for her own safety, naturally — leading to the film’s most obvious series of post-bromantic scenes: Holmes, in drag, finagles intimate poses with Watson under the cover of a masculine, wall-smashing train shoot-out. Their love affair is no longer subtextual; Ritchie exploits it for laughs with a knowing nod as if to say yes, these men are in each others’ hearts. One of them is rouged up in a corset. What of it? After all, the times are a-changin’. Industrialism is emerging in the world. Why not depict progressivism where emotional politics are concerned? Even the action achieves a balance of muscular machismo and delicate elegance. A forest chase through the woods of Germany allows for Ritchie’s showiest new trick, exploiting multiple high-speed cameras to explode entire tree trunks in gorgeous showers around his fleeing actors. Steadicam-like rigs trained on Holmes and Co. as they race through the battle give a disorienting, panting urgency to the chaos. The professor has designs on profiteering from World War — a cynical plot to capitalize on man’s natural impulse for conflict, he explains — but even Moriarty can’t resist delaying his plans for a last-act game of chess with Holmes. Ritchie dusts off and builds on the gimmicky Sherlock-o-Vision he devised in the previous film, which utilized speed ramping and choreography to illustrate Holmes’s near pre-cognitive ability to preview his own fist fights; the twist here allows for a delicious, penetrating intimacy that takes the Holmes-Moriarty pas de deux to its climax. Doyle students may see the final act telegraphed from a league away and heave a heavy sigh, or peck at the franchise’s signature obligatory plot convolutions and self-satisfied cleverness. Action purists should be entertained enough by the slick spectacles Ritchie chains together, set against as handsome a historical London as you’re bound to get from the movies. But focus on the heart of Holmes and there’s a well of emotions, attraction, and longing roiling beneath the natty threads, Downey-isms, and faux Victorian panache on display. The women of Sherlock hold their own, for the most part, but this is a romance for men — at least, it’s one for Holmes and Watson and Moriarty, who each discover that the dread, or triumph, of a world-changing event is no match for the heart-pounding pull of finding, or losing, the one person in the world to whom you’re indelibly, inextricably tied. Yeah, Baby: Austin Powers Reportedly Headed to Broadway

Just when you thought that Hollywood had run out of hit movies to adapt into Broadway musicals, word is spreading that Mike Myers is in discussions to translate his ’60s spy spoof series for the stage. But just how involved will the franchise creator and star be in Austin Powers: The Musical — especially when he is reportedly busy writing a fourth film installment for the British secret agent? A source close to the actor confirmed the news to the NY Post: “Mike is in talks to turn Austin Powers into a musical stage show. Mike would be heavily involved in writing the show, but he will not star in it, even though he has quite a good singing voice.” So yes, as clarified, the actor (with quite a good singing voice) — last seen in Inglourious Basterds and last heard in Shrek Forever After — will not be starring in the musical Austin Powers. After all, that would be a wildly taxing feat considering Myers played four different roles in the franchise (Austin Powers, Doctor Evil, Fat Bastard and Goldmember). Myers is also reportedly busy penning a fourth Austin Powers movie that is anticipated to arrive in theaters in 2013 or 2014. The last film, Austin Powers in Goldmember, was released in 2002. Is this a movie-to-musical adaptation that you will get behind? Or is your mojo rising more for Rocky’s German stage premiere? ‘Powers’ bound for B’way [NYP]

Angelina Jolie and 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson on Hollywood's Female Director Deficit, New 'Kung Fu Panda 3'

Directorial novice Angelina Jolie(In the Land of Blood and Honey) and her Kung Fu Panda 2 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, the highest-grossing female director of all time, were shot by Peggy Sirota for the cover of the currentHollywood Reporter. Recently, they sat down with THRsenior film writer Pamela McClintock for a frank discussion on the lack of female directors in Hollywood, their own directorial mentors, feelings on awards nominations (Panda 2 leads the Annie noms with 12 and Blood and Honey could get a Golden Globe nomination for best foreign language film) and the status of a Kung Fu Panda 3. Jolie also opens up about being a first-time director, explaining how she got a "famously unsuccessful" topic (war) funded, when she found the time to write and what really happened to shut down the Bosnia set ofBlood and Honey, which opens in limited release Dec. 23.our editor recommendsAngelina Jolie's 'In the Land of Blood and Honey': 4 New Clips Depict the Bosnian War (Video)Angelina Jolie Explains Choosing 'Blood and Honey' for Directorial Debut (Video)'Kung Fu Panda 2' Leads Annie Award Nominations'Kung Fu Panda 2' Crosses $300 Million OffshoreFEINBERG FORECAST: 'War Horse,' 'Extremely Loud,' 'Dragon Tattoo,' 'Iron Lady' and 'Blood and Honey' Remain Question Marks Their interview ran as a part of THR's larger female directors package, highlighting Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground), Dee Rees (Pariah), Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady), Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) and Patty Jenkins (Monster). PHOTOS: 5 of Hollywood's Hottest Female Directors WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT HOLLYWOOD'S DEARTH OF FEMALE DIRECTORS Although neither would label herself an activist for female causes per se, the duo are mystified as to why there aren't more women directors -- only 13.4 percent of the DGA's director members are female. To boot,Kung Fu Panda 2is only the second animated studio pic solely directed by a woman, afterThe Tigger Movie. Angelina Jolie:"Isn't that crazy? Animated films are so family-oriented, you'd think that there would be women." Jennifer Yuh Nelson:I don't think about the gender thing very much. But when I speak at schools, I've had female students say to me afterwards, "I never envisioned myself being a director, since I've never seen women do it." But after seeing me, they can picture themselves directing, so maybe we'll see more female directors. And half of these kids in art and animation schools are girls. PHOTOS: The Kung Fu Panda 2 Premiere ON MAKING THE SECONDKUNG FU PANDA AND WHY IT TOOK THREE YEARS Nelson:It's a long process, and you have to know exactly what's going to happen next. You can't do coverage. Everything has to be planned ahead of time. And you have to make sure that people are still motivated and happy and creatively challenged so that it can all be stitched together. The voice acting starts after a lot of the storyboards are done. With Angie, things would change when we got into the booth and played with her lines. We would discover things in the moment and rewrite the script on the spot. She really knows the character, so when she would say, "A tiger wouldn't say that," she was absolutely right. She gives Tigress that extra level, and that's why people like the character so much. Sometimes, Angie's kids would be in the booth with me. [Jolie's son] Maddox would say, "That take was good," and I'd think, OK, he likes it, let's take that one. Jolie:On the firstKung Fu Panda, I would fight a line. With Jen, she would politely say, "Can we just try it?" And you kind of melt and say, "OK." She is a genuine artist who can see the bigger picture. And, fortunately, I've scored some points at home because of Kung Fu Panda. They love Tigress, who is my alternate personality. Otherwise, they think Brad [Pitt] and I are just so not cool. PHOTOS: Angelina Jolie's Top 10 Red Carpet Looks THEIR DIRECTORIAL ROLE MODELS Jolie:I've had the fortunate experience of working with so many interesting directors, from Michael Winterbottom to Clint Eastwood. I tried to remember the experiences that were my best as an actor, and what a director did to give me comfort and confidence. And I tried to keep a happy crew, which I learned a lot about from Clint and Jen. Nelson:I remember being in the middle ofKung Fu Panda, which took three years, and everyone was upset and tired and wondering if we were ever going to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and Guillermo del Toro stopped by and gave me the "man" speech. He said, "You've gotta man up and take this, and don't be scared of making bold choices." He was such a great supporter. PHOTOS: 'The Tourist's' Style JOLIE PERSONALLY FUNDED LARGE CHUNK OF IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY'S $15 MILLION BUDGET;GRAHAM KING PUT UP THE REST Jolie:I worked with him onThe Tourist, and one day I asked him if he'd read my script. I didn't know how he'd react, since on many levels, this was a big risk. I wasn't going to star in it, and I wanted to cast all local actors. It wasn't a pile of good news for him. But he was great, and he took the chance. PHOTOS: Hollywood's 10 Highest-Paid Actresses WHEN SHE FOUND THE TIME TO WRITE THE SCRIPT Jolie:I wrote whenever I could, when the kids were asleep or in their classes. Halfway through some of the most horrific scenes, I'd hear, "Mommy, I need another story, I can't go to sleep," and so I'd pause what I was doing and go tell happy stories about bunny villages. I studied a lot about the war, and watched a lot of documentaries. They won't see this movie. They know that mommy, on occasion, goes off to Libya or other places. I make them very conscious of the fact that there are a lot of people struggling through different things, and I don't protect them from the fact that war isn't a video game, it's a very, very horrible thing. THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE BOSNIAN WOMAN WHO PROTESTED HER MOVIE Before reading her script, the Bosnian government temporarily suspended Jolie's filming permit when the Association of Women Victims of War in Bosnia objected to a Muslim woman falling in love with her Serb captor. But, that wasn't the case -- the two fall in love before the war starts -- so the film's permit was reissued. Jolie:There was one woman who hadn't read the script, and who didn't want to meet with me. This is a very sensitive subject for someone who lived through these things. It's only been 15 years since the war and it's a painful memory. In my heart, the film was done on behalf of all people who suffered through this. A lot of women's groups have seen it, and the NY premiere of the movie was co-sponsored by Women for Women International, another group founded after the war in Bosnia. They felt it was the right thing to support it. Nelson:It's definitely not a passive movie and it makes you think. VIDEOS: 4 Clips From 'In the Land of Blood and Honey' THE STATUS OF KUNG FU PANDA 3 Nelson:There's plenty left to tell. Jolie:We can say we are in discussions. Tigress is my alternate personality, especially with children. I love animation because you get to do things you don't normally get to. For one, I could bring my kids and wear my pajamas, and hang out with Jen. And my character is just so badass. Nelson:And the stunts are safe. Jolie:Yes, eating pizza is the hardest stunt we did. Supernatural Episode Recap: "Death's Door"

Bobby. Bobby. Bobby. The most popular gruff father figure/hunter reaches "Death's Door." Again. Situations are searching serious and permanent after being shot within the mind in "How you can Win Buddies and Influence Monsters." While Bobby's inside a coma, a reaper visits him, that is never a great sign. So that as he encounters his life's finest (and worst) hits and attempts to try to acquire some essential Leviathan apple to Mike and Dean, we discover a great deal concerning the character and go to get all teary-eyed along the way. The final Supernatural of 2011 is an extremely emotional episode. Jim Beaver does a great job of offerring a guy eager to outsmart, overcome and outplay a reaper who's after Bobby. To be able to discover a method to return to the boys and provide them some necessary information he got during Leviathan captivity, he needs to sort out some painful reminiscences. But reliving his worst memory might be the important thing to returning to the boys. Steven Williams has returned for "Death's Door." I am still (a lot more than) just a little bitter over Rufus getting been wiped out off in Season 6 but a minimum of this examine Bobby's brain includes seeing Bobby & Rufus for action as ghost-hunting partners. Rufus also eventually ends up associated Singer about this examine his "fruitcake" and functions as kind of helpful information. It is good to determine Rufus return although that which was track of that earring? It had been dangling. A few running styles develop. Something which just get repeated is Bobby "breaks" everything he touches. Also, the ghost he and Rufus are attempting to rid the field of calls him a heart breaker. And the wife informs him he broke her heart. Poor Bobby. A lot of reasons equal to why he's virtually damaged inside. Because of his abusive childhood, he's broken. He's an alcoholic for any father along with a wronged enabler of the mother that keeps making excuses and accusing her boy for his dad's abusive behavior. The little one can't do anything whatsoever with no father taking it on his family. Within this very "Eternal friggin' Sunshine" examine Bobby's mind, it is going in one memory to a different to a different so quick I am not necessarily sure what's real. Like whenever a youthful Bobby shoots his father following the adult Bobby finally confronts him. Did that actually happen? Did Bobby really shoot and kill his father when he am youthful? After which when he was a grownup he needed to kill his possessed wife? So unfair. Such as the reaper stated, he's "the only situation of genetic bullet-in-the-brain he's seen.Inch Younger crowd hits the bottle a tad too similar to his father. No surprise Bobby did not wish to have any kids. And that is the large thought we learned concerning his wife. She recognized Bobby did not wish to have any kids and felt tricked and her heart broke because she wanted them badly and that he understood she did. We learn she got possessed only 72 hours after their confrontation so we know why. She was weaker to being absorbed due to her fragile frame of mind. Bobby places blame themself for which happened to his wife. In the end, he is doing break everything he touches. Another theme that evolves isn't a brand new one. It simply will get fleshed out more. Bobby's relationship with Mike and Dean is most likely the most important relationship of his existence apart from the main one together with his wife. And That I got just a little teary writing that sentence that is crazy. Among the reminiscences we have seen is Bobby and Dean inside a park. Per John's orders, Dean's said to be practicing to shoot double-barrel shotguns but Bobby takes him to experience catch. Later, he even needs to defend themself to John about playing catch with Dean rather than training him. We find out how important the boys will be to him through the episode but more about that the little later. First, let us take a rest from Bobby's noggin' and discuss what are you doing within the real life. Mike and Dean are naturally worried and upset and concerned for his or her "uncle." Mike does not move not even close to Bobby's room. There's certainly a great deal being applied underneath but he's in charge. At some point, he's working that scar on his hands so he's most likely seeing Lucifer and attempting to make things disappear. Mike also wants to speak to Dean by what they are going to need to do if/when Bobby dies. Sam's just attempting to be sensible. Dean's the precise complete opposite of course. He's getting around a great deal, his tension is appropriate in the surface and that he appears like he's prepared to blow at any second. When that hospital administrator foretells Bobby's next of kin (Dean) about Mr. Singer giving his organs, Dean punches the wall and informs the man to escape him. Good move, guy. He then goes outdoors where he sees the smuggy smuggerson referred to as Leviathan Dick Roman. Dean's attempting to provoke some kind of reaction but Dick does not budge. He informs Dean to visit check up on Bobby. In the end, he's an excellent shot. There have been a couple of moments that helped me tear up. I understand I most likely wasn't the only person: "You have done enough. Trust me.Inch "I do not care." "Why?" "Because they are my boys." Bobby awakens and creates the amounts (the Leviathan apple) on Sam's hands. He musters in the strength to express "idjits" after which immediately begins to flatline. "You break all you touch." "Uh huh. Well, as fate might say, I adopted two boys plus they was raised great. They was raised heroes! To help you visit hell!" "They will be OK without you." "Last memory, huh? Glad I saved the very best for last." Bobby walks in to the room where Mike and Dean are quarreling like siblings over menial things. Dean wants Mike to exhibit "his elders some respect" and Mike calls Dean an "a--hat." It's nice to determine them this way. Bobby thinks also. All he is able to do is relax and drink everything in. And so the siblings disappear, the bullet melting his reminiscences away. The reaper turns up once again and states: "Well, Bobby? Stay or go. What's it likely to be?Inch Credits. My problem with "Death's Door": Apart from the high cliff-hanger ending, this did not really appear just like a midseason finale in my experience. Apart from Bobby obtaining the amounts to Mike and Dean, it did not really move any large picture action forward greatly. That's awesome for normal weekly episodes however for a midseason finale, I expect a bit more Random Ideas -They went all CSI a few occasions to exhibit the road the bullet experienced Bobby's brain, did not they? -The number of occasions did Bobby say "balls?" -Large Dad Winchester is again made to resemble a bad father. If Jeffrey Dean Morgan ever turns up to experience John again (and that i sincerely hope he is doing), I question the way the show's going additional? The boys have a great deal to be angry about. And I wish to view it all engage in. Much like Bobby got related to his father. -Clearly Ridge Canipe is simply too old to experience the youthful Dean Winchester necessary for this flashback (he's 17 now). However it was still being odd to determine a brand new kid actor playing him. Seeing Bobby and Dean play catch is a superb moment however i was slightly removed from it as this kid looks so not the same as Ridge. -Again, James Patrick Stuart performs exceptionally well at causeing this to be guy super smarmy. I'm not sure how he is doing it. -Dean and Mike were discussing the abilities of Chuck Norris versus Jet Li. After which throughout among the commercial breaks was an advertisement for something which featured Chuck Norris. Strange. -How sad maybe it was when things stored vanishing in Bobby's limbo-land? It is because his brain matter was vanishing. Boo. -Amounts on Supernatural? Appears a lot more like Lost. -Dean loves licorice and Mike loves peanut butter and blueberry sandwiches? How did we not know this before? -Love how clever Bobby is at trapping the reaper. Obviously, he accepted he'd learned a little from Mike and Dean's dealings with reapers. This episode did help remind me of "During My Duration of Dying" in additional ways than a single. Mike and Dean waiting helplessly his or her father (or father figure) flatlines. Attempting to return because they are needed. The reaper attempting to take proper care of business after which being turned away. Or perhaps in this situation, possibly turned away. We will not know without a doubt until Friday The month of january 6, 2012. Speak with everyone then. Allow the winter hellatus begin. show less
